MMM usually presents with fatigue, weight loss, splenomegaly with or without symptoms. Anemia and various alterations of the white blood cell and/or platelet count are frequently seen at diagnosis. Thrombocytopenia-related bleeding may occur. MMM must be distinguished from myelodysplasia with fibrosis, from acute megakayoblastic leukemia and acute myelofibrosis. As the disease progresses, incre...
متن کاملChronic Idiopathic Myelofibrosis Presenting as Cauda Equina Compression due to Extramedullary Hematopoiesis: A Case Report
Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is occasionally reported in idiopathic myelofibrosis and is generally found in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes several years after diagnosis. Myelofibrosis presenting as spinal cord compression, resulting from EMH tissue is very rare. A 39-yr-old man presented with back pain, subjective weakness and numbness in both legs. Sagittal magnetic resonance imaging...
متن کاملV617F mutation in JAK2 is associated with poorer survival in idiopathic myelofibrosis.
Most patients with polycythemia vera and half with idiopathic myelofibrosis and essential thrombocythemia have an acquired V617F mutation in JAK2. Using sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods, we genotyped 152 patients with idiopathic myelofibrosis to establish whether there were differences in presentation and outcome between those with and those without the mutation. Patients...
متن کاملBone Marrow Involvement and Myelofibrosis in Hodgkin’s Disease
555 Abstract: The importance of bone marrow biopsy in Hodgkin’s disease is well known. The incidence of bone marrow involvement in Hodgkin’s disease varies from 2% to 29%. The presence of myelofibrosis is not sufficent evidence for a definitive diagnosis of bone marrow involvement. Patients having myelofibrosis as a first symptom without peripheral lympadenopathy must be distinguished from pati...
متن کاملAcute variceal bleeding in a patient with idiopathic myelofibrosis successfully treated with endoscopic variceal band ligation and chemotherapy: a case report
INTRODUCTION Idiopathic myelofibrosis is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder characterized by leukoerythroblastosis, massive splenomegaly, and increases in the reticular and collagen fibers in the bone marrow. Portal hypertension is observed in some patients with idiopathic myelofibrosis. Gastrointestinal hemorrhages, which are due mostly to the rupture of the esophageal varices, have been sp...
